Why MD-SX ?

PREVENTING DAMAGE AND REDUCING RISK

Conventional oil mist detectors must vacuum up the oil mist from the crank case of the diesel engine to outside using a fan, which was then sent to the detecting device through a long suction pipe. MD-SX was developed to detect oil mist directly inside the crank case, eliminating the need for obstructive piping in narrow engine rooms.

RISK OF OVERHEATING

If abnormalities occur in the operation of a diesel engine at the bearing section of the piston or crankshaft, the bearing will reach high temperatures and a lot of oil mist will occur instantly. It is the role of an oil mist detector to detect the change immediately, emit a warning and prevent major accidents, such as an explosions.

With marine diesel engines, with an output of 2.250 kW or more, or an engine in which the cylinder bore exceeds 300 mm, the installation of an oil mist detector is required by the classification societies. Despite this, according to the Lloyd Register, it is reported that 143 vessel explosions due to engine accidents occurred from 1990 to 2001.

Normally the density of oil mist is 0.05~0.5 mg/l. The minimum level that could lead to an explosion is 50 mg/l. The alarm equipment must detect 1~1.5 mg/l as the maximum, because a disasters can occur very quickly after abnormity is detected.

SPEED AND RELIABILITY

Why hasn't there been any sensor which detects oil mist directly inside crank case previously? When the engine is in operation, the hydraulic oil pours constantly through the crankshaft inside the crank case. It has been but a dream for many years to develop a sensor which can detect oil mist particles with a diameter of 5 micrometers or less.

OIL MIST DETECTOR MD-SX Series has the latest technology, and it enables easy maintenance and high reliability while cutting down the detection time of unusually high oil mist density at the minimum level.
